There are several different “camps” when it comes to describing the being commonly known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch. One camp believes that Sasquatch is North America’s great ape – like our own version of the African Mountain Gorilla. Definitely flesh and blood, hairy, very secretive and very difficult to find. This first camp would probably say that Sasquatch migrated across a land bridge from Africa thousands of years ago, and somehow developed into what we now see as Bigfoot. The second camp would disagree with the first, and their opinion is that Sasquatch is not at all a great ape, but is rather a bi-pedal hominid, or perhaps a human hybrid. In their view, there is no way a great ape would walk almost exclusively on two legs, have a true language (however rudimentary), demonstrate a higher intelligence than the great apes as evidenced by how they manipulate their environment (tree structures, nesting sites etc), and how they interact with humans at various habituation sites around the country. Camp two would say that Sasquatch’s features are far more human-like than ape-like - albeit a much more massive and hairy version of the human form – and that they live in family groups not too different from our own nuclear families (Mom, Dad, kids and maybe a hungry hanger-on uncle or nephew to boot). Camp two would present evidence of Sasquatch’s language – such as the now famous “Sierra Sounds” recorded by Ron Moorhead in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the 1970’s. Howls, screams, whistles, jabbering, whoops are all part of Sasquatch’s repertoire – and similar vocalizations have been recorded around the country. Camp two would agree with Camp One when it comes to flesh and blood creatures with a very shy and retiring nature. Some in Camp Two, however, have started researching the “possibility” that Sasquatch is not only physical in nature, but that perhaps they have the ability to cloak themselves so as to be invisible to our eyes. This leads me to Camp number 3, who are the “Woo” people. What I mean by Woo is everything that is not physical, based on the scientific principle, and that cannot be measured in a controlled environment. You might hear the Woo folks speaking about Sasquatch’s “Alien Origins”, and that they definitely have the ability to move in and out of our dimension almost at will. Where they might go when they leave our dimension is anyone’s guess, because I do not know of a single case where a researcher attempted to pass through a “portal’ that led somewhere else. I’m not saying it has never happened, but I am not aware of anyone who has attempted done it and returned to tell their story. So, where am I? Probably somewhere between Camp two and Camp Three, as I believe Sasquatch is definitely related to Homo Sapiens in some way, that they are extremely intelligent, and that they may have the ability to put on the “Predator Effect” and go into stealth mode. In the end, who knows for sure? Until we have a body that can be studied, it’s just our favorite theories that separate us into our groups.
